New Space
The space environment is fundamentally changing. Over the past decade, the commercial space sector has seen tremendous growth and innovation, with new technologies emerging at an unprecedented pace. But space is becoming more crowded and competitive, and satellites are vulnerable to interference. Strategic competitors and adversaries are investing in technologies that may restrict Allied access and freedom to operate in space and target civilian and military infrastructure. Daniel Hilgert spoke about the critical role of the space domain for the security and prosperity of NATO nations and the importance of a closer relationship with the commercial sector. Daniel was appointed as NATO’s Senior Space Coordinator at its political headquarters in Brussels/Belgium. His role focuses on boosting NATO’s engagement with the commercial space sector and creating new investment opportunities for the Alliance. Furthermore, Daniel is leading the development of NATO’s first-ever Commercial Space Strategy, transforming the Alliance’s relationship with the booming commercial space sector and easing the adoption of ground-breaking space technologies.
