University Venture Funds
Together with Daniel Hoang, Mikkel Marfelt provided insights into the recent restructuring proposal for the University of Copenhagen’s (UCPH) Venture Fund to fund spinouts from its innovation ecosystem. Inspired by global best practices like Oxford Science Enterprises, The Engine, and UVC, this transformation seeks to overcome barriers such as limited funding, governance constraints, and rigid IP policies, enabling scalable and efficient spinout support. They explored strategies to combat challenges in tech transfer, limited deal flow, and the complexities of the spinout process, despite the abundance of talent and research at UCPH. Mikkel is passionate about university spinout infrastructures, with academic credentials from Copenhagen University, CBS, DTU, Harvard, and Stanford, and a PhD from Novo Nordisk. Over two decades, he has built deeptech and software companies, including Labster, scaling it to 500 employees and raising $150M from top investors like Balderton, Northzone, and A16Z. Mikkel also serves as an advisor to deeptech startups and initiatives, including the Council of Technology in Education, Copenhagen University Innovation Panel, and the European Lighthouse of AI for Sustainability (ELIAS).
