Defence Tech at Scale: Capital, Procurement & Sovereignty
Project A invests at pre-seed and seed, out of London, Munich and Berlin, and has been in European defence since before Europe had a defence tech market: Quantum Systems, ARX Robotics, STARK and more. We share some of our insights around European market - that this isn't Anduril with a European accent — the US builds around one customer with a $900bn budget, Europe builds around twenty-seven, each with its own procurement law and industrial base to protect. An American defence startup wins one programme and scales; a European one has to win Germany, then re-qualify for the Netherlands, then again for the UK, which is why the companies that work here are modular and software-defined from day one rather than platform-first. And the capital is shaped differently too: much of Europe's institutional money still carries exclusions on lethality, so the founders who go furthest are usually the ones who build dual-use into the architecture rather than bolting it on later — with Ukraine, not a test range, as the feedback loop.

*Jack is a Partner at Project A in London, where he leads Project A’s investments in Defence tech and Deep-Tech. Project A is a pan-European early-stage (pre-seed/seed) VC founded in 2012, managing €1.5bn across nine funds and backing 130+ companies including unicorns Trade Republic, Quantum Systems, Stark, Sennder and more. A former software engineer, Jack loves partnering with technical product oriented founders solving the world’s generational challenges. Jack’s route into venture was shaped by over a decade in product and engineering roles at Amazon and Macquarie Group across the US, Europe and APAC. That global perspective and hands-on experience now shapes how he works with founders and guides them through their start-up adventure. Jack holds an MBA from London Business School with studies at UC Berkeley Haas. Jack also holds a double degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Bioinformatics, 1st) and Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) from UNSW, Australia.
