The fire-hose talk covered recent and ongoing work conducted at MIT under the leadership of Dr AJ Perez. The primary topics covered were: airplane AI (Nominal USAF STTR phase II), computer vision for forest fire detection (Picogrid USSF STTR phase II), and sustainable large-scale composite additive manufacturing (MIT internal).
AJ is a 3x MIT mechanical engineering alumni, a 5x professional industrial founder, and experienced sustainability innovator. He holds a BS 2013 in Mechanical Engineering, Masters of Engineering in Advanced Manufacturing 2014, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering 2023 all from MIT. His academic interests, lectures, and research include advanced manufacturing, composite 3D printing, AI design, automation, robotics, recycling, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. Most recently, AJ was appointed as the Head Research Scientist in MIT’s Office of Innovation to lead USAF and USSF AI-focused research and as a Lecturer in the school of engineering to teach the new interdisciplinary USSOCOM IDEBT (innovate, design, engineer, build, test) 'Iron Man' course.
